I spent a few days staying at the home of a friend of a friend in Mumbai during the rainy season. A lovely couple whose hospitality I was grateful for. You could spend time in India yet still be confronted by some of what you see in Mumbai, in particular the extensive slums. People living without privacy, with minimal services and facilities. How they stay dry during the monsoon is a wonder to me, and I figure that plenty of them don't.

I was walking down one busy, narrow street after a downpour, and noticed a small patch of oil spreading on the wet road. It was symmetrical and looked like a mandala, so it seemed obvious to give it a go. Of course, this is a sign of a car that is either deteriorating or that hasn't been fixed properly, exactly the kind of car that there are an abundance of in India. As beautiful as the little spill was, it clearly felt symbolic of something else too. Hence the title, on 'Any Given Street'.
