This ornate church was built from 1883 by Alexander III, two years after his old man and then Tsar, Alexander II was assassinated. It was built on the location where political rebels, nihilists had attacked the carriage in which Al II was riding. He survived the first grenade, but was fatally wounded as he left the safety of his booth to remonstrate with the attackers. And so this classic Russian orthodox church winds up with an unusual name.

It’s a beautiful building and as such, it sees a lot of traffic. I can't remember why, but visitors were unable to enter the building that day...
