Peacock

The peacock experience that inspired this mandala is probably not what you might expect. Just outside the town of Launceston in Tasmania is Cataract Gorge, an awesome, rugged gorge cut by the South Esk River. A short way in is a large waterhole, above which can be found a tremendous recreation area, with a a large open air pool and a huge lawn space for picnics and taking the sun, a playground, tea-house, and a chairlift that will take you over and across to the other side of the waterhole, a botanic space with some exotic trees and plants... and peacocks!

My first couple visits it all felt pretty surreal to be honest, but the space is a pleasure to use and a great escape, so close to the town. If you've ever seen a peacock with its enormous feathers unfurled, you might understand how a mandala artist may feel called to record the spectacle.
