San Juan Basketball Court, Guatemala

Two or three hours drive from Antigua is the beautiful Lake Atitlan, a travellers paradise dotted with several small villages around its shores. Visits between hamlets are made in regular taxi boats for a small fare, each village with its own flavour. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this extraordinary, brand spanking new basketball court in San Juan, on the shore of this ancient caldera... and my disappointment not to have a ball! 🏀

The court was surrounded with murals of significant cultural history as related to sports, and included a detailed and colourful tribute to the Mayan calendar as the centre circle of the court itself. I'd never seen anything like it, and that view! Volcanoes everywhere...
