Swaminarayan Akshardham, India

Just outside new Delhi is a brand spanking new Hindu temple called Swaminarayan Akshardham. This was an unexpected change from so many other Indian sites that are so steeped in history and feel ancient.

The temple itself is magnificent, built on an elevated platform with a courtyard around and several wide stone stairwells into the lower courtyard and formal gardens that spread out around the complex. The wall that runs around this elevated platform for the temple is what really stood out to me, as it's covered in stone murals that appear to be celebrating the role of elephants in Indian culture and history, so many are there along its great length.

But the quality of the work. Of course, it's a modern temple, so they clearly had access to the finest tools, but the perfection and attention to detail in the stonework was truly remarkable. In fact the same could be said for every tile, every building block, every fitting however ornate of the temple itself. If you're ever in new Delhi, it's an extraordinary visit. Again, no cameras allowed.
