The Golden Temple is located in the city of Amritsar, in the Indian province of Punjab, and it's the holiest spiritual site of Sikhism. An enormous square pool surrounded by grand buildings, halls and shrines, a museum and clock tower, the golden temple itself is built on a platform in the middle of the pool, with a single walkway for access.
Every day, the site receives over 100,000 visitors and tourists, and everyone is entitled to a free vegetarian meal from the enormous kitchen on the site. Nobody is denied, as Sikhs welcome people from all religions and all walks of life without discrimination. Across 2 days I spent a lot of time at the Golden Temple, just taking it all in, seeing the people as they walked around the pool. The atmosphere and energy was tremendous, and I put that down to the accepting nature of Sikhism. A wonderful place, and worth a visit at night too!
