The Great Wave of Byron Bay, Australia

Byron Bay is only a small town but one of the major travel destinations of Oz these days. When I passed through in 2019, there was a van in the area with the Great Wave of Kanagawa painted on it, the famous image of Hokusai the Japanese wood-block printer.

I wanted to create an image that showed Byron Bay for several of its appeals… surfing, whale and dolphin watching, it’s historic lighthouse high up on Australia’s eastern-most point… and Mt Warning, the old volcanic peak, which people climb in the wee hours to catch the country’s first rays.
