So this court is pretty modest compared to some of the others that I’ve drawn. As much as anything, I was really taken with the ‘Montezuma’ grafitti piece that covered the main wall, a piece that I've so awkwardly bent into a circle a couple of time here! I spent ages trying to push it into that circle, it was really challenging!
Montezuma is one of my favourite places in Costa Rica and very small, so I was just so pleased to see that even here, you could shoot a hoop. Basketball is like music. Whether we enjoy it or not, it holds a common thread that we are all familiar with, regardless of where we come from. A free, public court gives opportunities to everyone, most importantly to those without privilege. Or simply pleasure. Likewise, legal street art. It extends the range from where mastery may emerge. It’s a beautiful thing.
