Far out. This I will never forget, one of the greatest travel experiences of my life. I’d heard the rumblings and reports from afar, and as I arrived in the World Heritage town of Antigua, sure enough, I discovered that it was possible to make a strenuous overnight hike up Vulcan Acatenango, do an ‘unofficial’ side trip for sunset to the shoulder of the living, fiery beast Fuego, and then wake at 3am to climb to the icy summit of Acatenango for sunrise. Fuego spouts lava and black smoke every few minutes, the longer the wait, the greater the boom! Needless to say the sleep was... poor. But what a trip. Never thought I’d see that. 🌋
