The Colosseum of Rome is perhaps the most famous of all landmarks, in the midst of a city full of historic ruins. I visited in 2013 and was stoked to spend an hour or so looking around what parts of the old amphitheatre were still safe and accessible, looking at what work had gone into it and imagining what it must have been like in its heyday. We all tend to think 'gladiators', but it was also used for theatre, public executions and even religious ceremonies.
